Many companies offer a paid submission service. Really all that is needed is your Home page's URL, Title and Description and then submit these to Google, Yahoo/Overture and DMOZ.
DMOZ is the odd one out. The submission to DMOZ is free but not guaranteed. It is worth doing because several search engines crawl the DMOZ directory to create their own search listings. However DMOZ is maintained by volunteers and so the time it takes to get listed very much depends on the individual who is moderating the category you wish to be listed in. SiteBoosting took less than 5 days from submission to listing but a quick read of the DMOZ forums shows some submissions have waited months or even years to be listed.
Tip: Read the submission guidelines for the search engine carefully and follow their instructions, especially with regard to DMOZ.
