  Reciprocal Links
|

|
Reciprocal Links are an exchange of links between two sites. This serves two purposes:
Firstly people may follow the links from one site to the other because they are interested in the service/product being shown - therefore it is important to put the "_blank" tag in your link codes so that your own site stays on the desktop rather than disappearing from view when a visitor follows a link.
Secondly, and more importantly, the main purpose of reciprocal links is to encourage search engines to give your site as high a rank as possible. The theory is that the more important the page, or the higher the page rank, the more important the website being linked to must be.
Additionally, the actual text used in the link is of critical importance. Rather than just the name of the site, also include the main keywords for your site in the link you wish people to use for your site.
Clearly to exchange links with other sites you need a links page or pages on your own site to put their links on. More importantly you neeed a "Link to us" page to encourage others to link to your site and to give clear instructions to other web masters as to how you wish them to link to your site. Not everyone will read these instructions but for those that do follow them, it will make your job far easier.
Tip: Link Farms, websites that are just a series of links and have no content, are to be avoided. Certain search engines' published policy states that they may penalise sites for appearing in link farms.
