Aim for at least 200 words on a page with a keyword density of between 10% and 15%.
Like the Title and Description tags don't make the Keywords tags too long. If you have a lot of essential keywords split them between different pages and optimize each page for the keywords on it.
Currently it is thought that the search engines either ignore the keyword tag altogether basing their indexing on the page content or only count the keywords in the tag which are actually in the content of the page.
As with the Title and Description tags, place the most important keywords at the beginning place the most important keywords at the beginning of the keyword tag.
Use HTML emphasis tags to highlight the the most important keywords in the content of the page.
The main keywords should also appear in the Title and Description tags. One of the most difficult tasks is to get sufficient keywords and keyword phrases into the page content whilst still creating relevant and readable content for your intended audience.
Search engine guidelines warn against loading pages with nothing but meaningless lists of keywords they can penalise such practice by placing pages lower down the search results lists or not listing the pages at all! If the search engines do not recognise this practice, your competitors may well notice and report it and the pages may be de-listed.
Tip: Always use the ALT tags of images on your page and always place combinations of keywords into these ALT tags.
